A visit to this island was totally unplanned. It came as a result of a telephone conversation with a work colleague who asked me if I was going to "visit her island". She had spent her early childhood and teens there. I headed off from Adelaide with two nights on the island in mind. Yeah right! The drive to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry is around a two hour drive down the Fleurieu Peninsula. Four days later I caught the ferry back to the mainland. This is a very special place with lots of contrasts in landscape, flora and fauna

| Frenchmans Rock is so named because sailors from French corvette, Le Geographe, under the command of Nicolas Baudin carved an inscription on the rock by the spring where they were repenishing their water. While waiting for the water casks to fill, one of the sailors carved on a nearby rock, "Expedition de decouverte par le commandant Baudin sur le Geograpghe 1803." (Translation, "Expedition of discovery by Captain Baudin in the Geographe 1803".) Below are a couple of Lazy Kiwis (New Zealand Fir seals) |
