About 350 kilometres south east of Adelaide on Guichen Bay , Robe remains one of the few towns little altered since the 19th Century.

The Port of Robe was created in 1847 and named after Major F H Robe Governor of South Australia.

Robe was a popular port of arrival for the large numbers of Chinese during the 1850s, due to Victoria charging $20 per Chinese landing. Robe was a free port and only 150 kms west of the unguarded Victorian border.

In Robe's colourful past it had a canning factory whch canned swans- sold as Robe geese, parrots- sold as Robe snipe and canned rabbit.
